Background of the Study

With the increasing reliance on digital platforms for research, administration, and communication, universities are prime targets for cyberattacks. Traditional security measures often fail to prevent sophisticated attacks such as data breaches, insider threats, and Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks (Olawale et al., 2023). Blockchain technology has emerged as a promising solution for enhancing network security due to its decentralized, immutable, and transparent nature (Chukwudi & Yusuf, 2024).

Blockchain offers enhanced security by storing data in distributed ledgers, making unauthorized modifications nearly impossible. Additionally, it enables smart contracts and cryptographic verification, reducing the risk of cyber threats (Ahmed & Bello, 2024). This study explores the potential of blockchain in strengthening the network security framework of Federal University, Kashere, and proposes an implementation strategy tailored to the institution’s needs.

Statement of the Problem

Federal University, Kashere, faces security challenges such as unauthorized data access, cyber threats, and network vulnerabilities. Traditional security models rely on centralized authentication mechanisms that are prone to breaches and single points of failure. Blockchain technology offers a decentralized approach to security, yet its adoption in university networks remains limited due to technical and infrastructural challenges. This study aims to examine how blockchain can be integrated into the university’s security framework to enhance protection against cyber threats.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the current network security challenges at Federal University, Kashere.

  2. To explore the potential benefits of blockchain technology in enhancing network security.

  3. To propose a blockchain-based security framework for implementation at the university.

Research Questions

  1. What are the current network security challenges faced by Federal University, Kashere?

  2. How can blockchain technology improve network security within the university?

  3. What strategies can be used to integrate blockchain-based security solutions into the university’s network?

Significance of the Study

This study will provide a roadmap for implementing blockchain-based security solutions in Federal University, Kashere. It will serve as a reference for IT administrators and researchers exploring decentralized security mechanisms.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of blockchain technology in enhancing network security at Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State. It does not cover general blockchain applications such as cryptocurrency and supply chain management.

Definitions of Terms

  • Blockchain: A decentralized digital ledger that records transactions securely and transparently.

  • Smart Contracts: Self-executing contracts with the terms of the agreement directly written into code.

  • Decentralized Security: A security model that eliminates central points of failure by distributing data across multiple nodes.
